Denise Johnson is the Executive Director for BGirlz Academy. She has spent most of her career in the non-profit world known for her stellar relationship-building skills, while gracefully collaborating and working effectively to enhance team commitment, individual performance, and morale.
Prior to joining BGirlz Academy, Denise was the Executive Director for GoMentor, in Durham NC. While serving at GoMentor she increased the volunteer mentors from 225 to over 500. Under her leadership GoMentor increased the number of schools they served from 24 to 52 schools across three counties in North Carolina. She reduced training expenses by 40% by digitizing most training materials, while still offering high-quality trainings to mentors.
In 2016, GoMentor received the Community in Schools “Partnership Award”. Established and maintained strong partnerships with local public and private schools, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, YMCA, the Boys & Girls Club along with churches and other community organizations.
In 2007, she co-founded the non-profit, Life Strategies and served as Director of Administration and Director of Programs. Denise has always been passionate about young people. She wants each young person to understand his/her value.
In 1996, while serving in the New York City’s Police Department Explorer’s program Denise created a program to reduce youth dating violence that was later adopted by the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office. She is a member of Communities Against Bullying in Holly Springs, NC. Denise is the co-author of the children’s book, The Adventures of Little Nina.
Denise relocated from her hometown of Brooklyn, New York to Cary, North Carolina with her husband James and their daughters Christina “Nina” and Jessica “Essi”.
